Commentary

Shaped ostraca made from a wall of a BG open vessel are a common find on Berezan and at Olbia. Often these roundels are not inscribed. The back of the ostracon shows part of an eye of the original painted decoration of an Attic eye-cup. It is possible that the choice of the potsherd for making the shaped ostracon was determined by the presence of this decoration: there is noticeable preference for fragments of painted pottery for some shaped ostraca.
